Summary

The anon.image_blur() function in PostgreSQL Anonymizer before 3.3.0 does not check the declared dimensions of the provided image, allowing an attacker to supply a small image with enormous declared dimensions. This can exhaust backend memory and cause an OOM-kill, resulting in cluster-wide crash recovery.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can trigger memory exhaustion and crash the entire PostgreSQL cluster, causing service unavailability and requiring crash recovery.

Recommendation

Upgrade PostgreSQL Anonymizer to version 3.3.0 or later and restrict access to anon.image_blur() to trusted users.

Original NVD description (English source)

PostgreSQL Anonymizer's `anon.image_blur()` function doesn't check the declared dimension of the provided image, allowing an attacker to provide a small image with enormous declared dimensions. This vulnerability can be exploited to exhaust the memory of a backend and OOM-kill it (when ovecommit is on), which results in a cluster-wide crash recovery. The problem is resolved in PostgreSQL Anonymizer 3.3.0 and later versions.
