CVE-2025-27538

LowCVSS 2.2
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

Mattermost versions 10.5.x <= 10.5.1 and 9.11.x <= 9.11.9 fail to enforce MFA checks in the PUT /api/v4/users/user-id/mfa endpoint when the requesting user differs from the target user ID. This allows users with the edit_other_users permission to activate or deactivate MFA for other users, even if those users have not set up MFA.

Risk Assessment

A user with the edit_other_users permission can weaken the security of other users' accounts by disabling MFA, increasing the risk of account takeover. This violates the organization's multi-factor authentication policy.

Recommendation

Update Mattermost to a version containing the fix (above 10.5.1 or 9.11.9) and restrict the edit_other_users permission to the necessary minimum.
