Summary

A user with permission to deploy artifacts to a hosted Maven repository can upload a POM file with an oversized metadata field. This permanently breaks listing or browsing of that repository's components until an administrator repairs the data. Only the targeted repository is affected; others remain unaffected.

Risk Assessment

The attack can cause permanent unavailability of the Maven repository, disrupting development and deployment processes. Administrative intervention is required to restore functionality.

Recommendation

Restrict artifact deployment permissions to trusted users and monitor uploaded POM files for oversized metadata fields. In case of an attack, an administrator should repair the repository data.
