Summary

In the Linux kernel, the drm/vmwgfx driver on HW version 10 did not have GB surfaces, so there was no backing buffer for surface-backed framebuffers. This resulted in a null pointer dereference and driver crash causing a black screen.

Risk Assessment

Can cause a graphics driver crash and black screen on VMware virtual machines with virtual hardware version 10, preventing use of the graphical interface.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for the vmwgfx driver.
