Summary

A NULL function pointer dereference vulnerability exists in the Linux kernel's i2c/smbus subsystem. It occurs when using the designware controller in target-only mode, where the assumption of an always-available transfer function is broken. The fix adds a pointer check in __i2c_transfer.

Risk Assessment

Can cause a kernel OOPS and denial of service on systems using the i2c controller in target-only mode.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that checks the function pointer in __i2c_transfer.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i2c: smbus: fix NULL function pointer dereference Baruch reported an OOPS when using the designware controller as target only. Target-only modes break the assumption of one transfer function always being available. Fix this by always checking the pointer in __i2c_transfer. [wsa: dropped the simplification in core-smbus to avoid theoretical regressions]
