Summary

In the Linux kernel, a fix was made to reduce excessive rtnl lock pressure in smc_pnet_create_pnetids_list() within the net/smc subsystem. This function was called during network namespace creation even when no network device existed yet, causing unnecessary acquisition of the rtnl lock and numerous syzbot reports of extreme rtnl pressure. The patch returns early from smc_pnet_net_init() if there is no netdevice yet.

Risk Assessment

Excessive rtnl lock pressure can lead to delays in network operations and, in extreme cases, to hangs or denial of service (DoS) in systems that heavily create network namespaces. The issue mainly affects environments with many containers or virtual machines.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for CVE-2024-35934. If updating is not possible, consider restricting the ability of unprivileged users to create network namespaces.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/smc: reduce rtnl pressure in smc_pnet_create_pnetids_list() Many syzbot reports show extreme rtnl pressure, and many of them hint that smc acquires rtnl in netns creation for no good reason [1] This patch returns early from smc_pnet_net_init() if there is no netdevice yet. I am not even sure why smc_pnet_create_pnetids_list() even exists, because smc_pnet_netdev_event() is also calling smc_pnet_add_base_pnetid() when handling NETDEV_UP event.
