Summary

In the Linux kernel, the powerpc/imc-pmu module lacked a null pointer check on the pointer returned by kasprintf() in update_events_in_group(). On allocation failure, kasprintf() returns NULL, which can lead to a null pointer dereference.

Risk Assessment

A null pointer dereference can cause a kernel panic and denial of service (DoS) on PowerPC systems. Exploitation requires triggering a memory allocation failure during IMC PMU operations.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for CVE-2023-52675. If immediate update is not possible, consider restricting access to IMC PMU interfaces for unprivileged users.
