Summary

In the Linux kernel's nf_tables_updtable, if nf_tables_table_enable returns an error, nft_trans_destroy is called to free the transaction object. nft_trans_destroy() calls list_del(), but the transaction was never placed on a list, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference.

Risk Assessment

A NULL pointer dereference can cause a kernel panic and denial of service on the affected system. In environments where unprivileged users can perform nf_tables operations, this may be exploited for DoS.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for this issue. If updating is not possible, restrict the ability of unprivileged users to perform nf_tables operations.

In nf_tables_updtable, if nf_tables_table_enable returns an error, nft_trans_destroy is called to free the transaction object. nft_trans_destroy() calls list_del(), but the transaction was never placed on a list -- the list head is all zeroes, this results in a NULL pointer dereference.
