CVE-2006-3901

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

Multiple stack-based buffer overflows exist in Tumbleweed Email Firewall (EMF). The vulnerability can be exploited remotely by sending an email attachment containing an LHA archive with a file or directory with a long LHA extended header, a "temporary pathname" field longer than 2 bytes, or a long filename. This allows arbitrary code execution.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can remotely execute arbitrary code in the context of the email processing service, potentially leading to system compromise or data leakage. The risk is high because only a specially crafted email is required.

Recommendation

Update Tumbleweed Email Firewall to the version containing the vendor patch as soon as possible. Until patching, filtering LHA attachments at the mail gateway is recommended.
