CVE-2006-3628

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

Multiple format string vulnerabilities in Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) versions 0.10.x through 0.99.0 exist in the ANSI MAP, Checkpoint FW-1, MQ, XML, and NTP dissectors. A remote attacker can exploit these flaws to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code.

Risk Assessment

The vulnerability can crash Wireshark while processing malicious network traffic and, in the worst case, allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system running the application.

Recommendation

Update Wireshark to the latest version (later than 0.99.0) or apply the vendor-supplied patch. Avoid analyzing untrusted packet capture (pcap) files with vulnerable versions.
