CVE-2026-99238

HighCVSS 7.8
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A use-after-free in the Linux kernel tracing subsystem: trace_module_record() walks ftrace_trace_arrays from the module notifier without trace_types_lock, while a concurrent rmdir of an instance removes and frees it under that lock. A module load or unload can therefore walk into a freed trace_array.

Risk Assessment

A local attacker could trigger a kernel use-after-free, potentially causing a system crash or privilege escalation. Exploitation requires the ability to manipulate tracing instances and kernel modules.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix. Restrict the ability to load/unload modules and manipulate tracing instances to trusted users.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Hold trace_types_lock when updating modules in persistent instances trace_module_record() walks ftrace_trace_arrays from the module notifier without trace_types_lock. A concurrent rmdir of an instance removes it from the list and frees it under that lock, so a module load or unload can walk into a freed trace_array.
