Summary

In the Linux kernel, the btrfs sb_write_pointer() function reads the superblock from the block device page cache via read_cache_page_gfp() without protection against block size changes. The fix takes the mapping invalidate lock around the read to serialize it against block size changes.

Risk Assessment

A race with BLKBSZSET can cause the superblock to be read with an inconsistent block size. This may lead to mount errors or btrfs filesystem corruption.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that protects sb_write_pointer() with the invalidate lock.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: protect sb_write_pointer() with invalidate lock sb_write_pointer() reads the super block from the block device page cache using read_cache_page_gfp(). This has the same race with BLKBSZSET as the one fixed by commit 3f29d661e568 ("btrfs: sync read disk super and set block size"). Take the mapping invalidate lock around read_cache_page_gfp() to serialize the read against block size changes.
