Summary

In the Linux kernel, the ntfs3 filesystem did not handle set_blocksize failures; because it uses buffer_heads which do not handle block sizes larger than PAGE_SIZE well, mounting could hit BUG_ON in folio_set_bh. The fix handles these failures.

Risk Assessment

Mounting a crafted NTFS filesystem may trigger a kernel panic (BUG_ON), causing denial of service or system reboot.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing set_blocksize failure handling in the ntfs3 filesystem.

Original NVD description (English source)

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs3: handle set_blocksize failures ntfs3 uses buffer_heads, which don't handle block size > PAGE_SIZE well. Without this, mounting we will hit the BUG_ON(offset >= folio_size(folio)); in folio_set_bh on the first __bread_gfp call.
