Summary

In the Linux kernel, serial_core_unregister_port() passes port->port_dev to serial_core_get_ctrl_dev(), which dereferences it. When port->port_dev is NULL (no port device installed or registration failed before serial_core_port_device_add()), a NULL pointer dereference occurs.

Risk Assessment

NULL pointer dereference causes kernel panic and system unavailability (DoS), especially during detachment or unregistration of serial ports.

Recommendation

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix that returns early when there is no port device and reads port->port_dev under port_mutex. Avoid unnecessary unregistration of serial ports until the fix is deployed.
