CVE-2026-6554

HighCVSS 7.5
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Exploitation Probability (EPSS)

Low risk
0.31%

23th percentile - higher than 23% of all known CVEs

Summary

The libpcap BPF interpreter treats the offset in the 'ja L' BPF instruction as a signed integer to implement looping via backward jumps, but does not limit the number of loop iterations. A crafted filter program or the 'protochain' primitive used on a crafted network packet can cause the interpreter to loop infinitely.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can cause the packet-processing process to hang or exhaust resources, resulting in denial of service. This may disrupt network monitoring and analysis tools.

Recommendation

Update libpcap to a version containing the fix. Until then, avoid processing untrusted BPF filters and network packets.
