Summary

In Open edX, the HTML sanitizer clean_thread_html_body() used for discussion notification emails fails to remove <style> tags from user-generated post content. The content is rendered with Django's |safe filter in email templates, allowing any enrolled student to inject arbitrary CSS into notifications sent to other users.

Risk Assessment

This enables email tracking (IP address disclosure), content spoofing, and phishing attacks against other platform users. The risk affects organizations using Open edX for online learning.

Recommendation

Apply the fix from commit cddc25cd791bb78f76833896e4778f668861df12 or update Open edX to a version containing it. Until deployed, consider disabling discussion email notifications.
