Summary

Weblate before 5.17 validates repository boundaries using string prefix checks on resolved absolute paths. Multiple code paths use startswith against the repository root, which is not path-segment aware and can be bypassed when an external path shares the same string prefix (e.g., repo and repo_outside). This is fixed in 5.17.

Risk Assessment

Bypassing validation may allow access to files outside the intended repository directory, risking data leakage or unauthorized reads. This affects the confidentiality of data stored on the server.

Recommendation

Update Weblate to version 5.17 or later. Until then, consider restricting access to repository-related features and monitoring unusual access paths.

Original NVD description (English source)

Weblate is a web based localization tool. In versions prior to 5.17, repository-boundary validation relies on string prefix checks on resolved absolute paths. In multiple code paths, the check uses startswith against the repository root path. This is not path-segment aware and can be bypassed when the external path shares the same string prefix as the repository path (for example, repo and repo_outside). This issue has been fixed in version 5.17.
