Summary

In Vikunja prior to 2.3.0, scoped API token enforcement for custom project background routes is method-confused. A token with only projects.background can delete a project background, while a token with only projects.background_delete is rejected, constituting a scoped-token authorization bypass.

Risk Assessment

A user with a limited token can perform a project background deletion operation they should not be authorized for. This may lead to unauthorized data modification.

Recommendation

Update Vikunja to version 2.3.0. Until then, review and restrict API token scopes and monitor for unusual project background operations.
