CVE-2026-40026
MediumCVSS 4.4Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk3th percentile - higher than 3% of all known CVEs
Summary
The Sleuth Kit through 4.14.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the ISO9660 filesystem parser where the parse_susp() function trusts len_id, len_des, and len_src fields from the disk image to memcpy data into a stack buffer without verifying that the source data falls within the parsed SUSP block. An attacker can craft a malicious ISO image that causes reads past the end of the SUSP data buffer, and a zero-length SUSP entry can trigger an infinite parsing loop.
Risk Assessment
The vulnerability may lead to disclosure of sensitive data or system crashes during forensic analysis of ISO images.
Recommendation
Update The Sleuth Kit to version 4.14.1 or later if available; otherwise, avoid processing untrusted ISO images.
Other vulnerabilities in The Sleuth Kit
See all- CVE-2026-120454Medium
The Sleuth Kit through 4.15.0 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in decmpfs_decompress_lzvn_attr() that allows attackers to crash the tool by supplying a crafted HFS+ image. A huge uncompressed_size in an LZVN inline com.apple.decmpfs attribute causes allocation failure and a write through NULL.
- CVE-2026-120453Low
The Sleuth Kit through 4.15.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in hfs_load_extended_attrs() in tsk/fs/hfs.c that reads the decmpfs header without checking attribute length. Attackers can supply a crafted HFS+ image with a com.apple.decmpfs attr_size of 1 to 15 to read past the allocation and crash analysis tools like istat or icat.
- CVE-2026-40025Medium
The Sleuth Kit through 4.14.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the APFS filesystem keybag parser where the wrapped_key_parser class follows attacker-controlled length fields without bounds checking, causing heap reads past the allocated buffer. An attacker can craft a malicious APFS disk image that triggers information disclosure or crashes when processed by any Sleuth Kit tool that parses APFS volumes.
