Summary

A Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) vulnerability exists in the install utility of uutils coreutils when using the -D flag. The command creates parent directories and then performs a second path resolution to create the target file, neither anchored to a directory file descriptor. An attacker with concurrent write access can replace a path component with a symbolic link between these operations, redirecting the privileged write to an arbitrary file system location.

Risk Assessment

A local attacker may cause a file to be written to an arbitrary location with privileged process permissions, potentially overwriting critical system files or escalating privileges. The risk affects scenarios where install -D runs with elevated privileges in attacker-writable directories.

Recommendation

Update uutils coreutils to a version containing the fix. Until patched, avoid running install -D with elevated privileges in directories writable by untrusted users.
