CVE-2026-33646
CriticalCVSS 9.6Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk40th percentile - higher than 40% of all known CVEs
Summary
The mise tool prior to version 2026.3.10 processes .tool-versions files through the Tera template engine with the exec() function registered, enabling arbitrary command execution. Unlike .mise.toml files, .tool-versions files are not subject to trust verification in non-paranoid mode, allowing an attacker to place a malicious file in a git repository and execute commands without a trust prompt.
Risk Assessment
The risk is that a victim with mise activated, upon entering a directory with a git repository containing a malicious .tool-versions file, may unknowingly execute arbitrary commands, leading to system compromise or data theft.
Recommendation
Immediately update mise to version 2026.3.10 or later. Additionally, consider enabling paranoid mode for all configuration files to enforce trust verification.
Other vulnerabilities in mise
See all- CVE-2026-103929High
Prior to 2026.7.14, in the default non-safe mode, mise loads .mise.toml [settings] from an untrusted local project before trust approval and strip_local_only_settings removes only fields marked global_only. The unix_default_file_shell_args, unix_default_inline_shell_args, windows_default_file_shell_args, and windows_default_inline_shell_args settings were not marked global_only, allowing a repository to replace the default interpreter arguments used by trusted tasks that have no explicit shell, postinstall directives, template exec operations, or hooks that fall back to the default shell. When mise appends the trusted command after the attacker-controlled interpreter arguments, the attacker-selected command can execute first with the developer account's privileges even though the local configuration was never trusted.
- CVE-2026-71477Medium
The mise tool, managing developer tool versions, before version 2026.7.1 records mise/bin/mise with user and group ID 1001, and the installation process does not normalize ownership, allowing a local user with those IDs to replace the installed executable, especially when MISE_INSTALL_PATH targets a shared location like /usr/local/bin.
- CVE-2026-35533High
mise manages dev tools like node, python, cmake, and terraform. From 2026.2.18 through 2026.4.5, mise loads trust-control settings from a local project .mise.toml before the trust check runs. An attacker who can place a malicious .mise.toml in a repository can make that same file appear trusted and then reach dangerous directives such as [env] _.source, templates, hooks, or tasks.
Original NVD description (English source)
mise manages dev tools like node, python, cmake, and terraform. Prior to 2026.3.10, mise processes .tool-versions files through the Tera template engine during parsing, with the exec() function registered, enabling arbitrary command execution. Unlike .mise.toml files, .tool-versions files are not subject to trust verification in non-paranoid mode. This means an attacker can place a malicious .tool-versions file in a git repository, and when a victim with mise activated cds into the directory, arbitrary commands execute without any trust prompt. This vulnerability is fixed in 2026.3.10.
