Summary

Any guest can cause xenstored to crash by issuing an XS_RESET_WATCHES command within a transaction due to an assert() triggering. If xenstored was built with NDEBUG defined, nothing bad will happen, as assert() does nothing in that case. Note that the default is not to define NDEBUG for xenstored builds even in release builds of Xen.

Risk Assessment

A xenstored crash can disrupt the entire Xen environment, including virtual machines and hypervisor management. The risk affects Xen hosts where xenstored is not built with NDEBUG.

Recommendation

Update Xen to a version containing the fix for CVE-2026-23557. Alternatively, consider rebuilding xenstored with NDEBUG defined if feasible in your environment.
