31th percentile - higher than 31% of all known CVEs

Summary

pybars3 through 0.9.7 and pybars4 through 0.9.13 contain a code injection vulnerability in pybars/_compiler.py that allows template authors to execute Python code via unescaped bracketed path segments. Attackers can supply Handlebars templates with crafted segments in helper or block arguments to break out of string literals and execute Python in the application process.

Risk Assessment

If the application processes templates from untrusted users, an attacker can execute arbitrary Python code in the application context, leading to full system compromise. Risk is high where templates are supplied by end users or external sources.

Recommendation

Update pybars3/pybars4 to a patched version or enforce validation and sanitization of template path segments. Until a patch is available, avoid processing untrusted Handlebars templates.
