Summary

A stack-based buffer overflow in the prh_sdp_service_search_decode function of Alpine iLX-F511 devices allows remote code execution. The flaw results from lack of validation of user-supplied data length before copying it to a stack buffer. The attacker must first pair a malicious Bluetooth device with the target.

Risk Assessment

A network-adjacent attacker, after pairing a malicious Bluetooth device, can execute code as root and take control of the system. Risk applies to vehicles equipped with Alpine iLX-F511.

Recommendation

Apply the firmware update from Alpine. Until patched, avoid pairing unknown Bluetooth devices.

Original NVD description (English source)

Alpine iLX-F511 prh_sdp_service_search_decode Stack-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Alpine iLX-F511 devices. An attacker must first obtain the ability to pair a malicious Bluetooth device with the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the prh_sdp_service_search_decode function. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a stack-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-29069.
