Summary

MIME::Words versions before 5.521 for Perl allow memory exhaustion via repeated "=?" sequences in decode_mimewords. For each "=?" that does not start a complete encoded word, decode_mimewords appends an error message containing the whole input string to $@, so 8,000 "=?" pairs add about 128 MB. From version 5.518, MIME::Parser decodes every multipart boundary this way, so a remote sender can exhaust the parsing process memory with one Content-Type header.

Risk Assessment

A remote attacker can send an email with a crafted Content-Type header, exhausting memory in the mail processing process and causing denial of service. This can block mail processing for the entire organization.

Recommendation

Update MIME::Words (and the related MIME::Parser) to version 5.521 or later. Consider limiting header size and nesting depth in the mail processing pipeline.
