2th percentile - higher than 2% of all known CVEs

Summary

libLAS through 1.8.1 contains a heap out-of-bounds write in the point record reader caused by truncating the schema byte size to 16 bits when sizing the point buffer. Attackers can craft a .las file with a LASSchema variable length record whose schema exceeds 65535 bytes, causing memory corruption.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can remotely cause memory corruption and crash tools such as lasinfo, las2las, or las2txt, potentially enabling a denial-of-service attack or code execution. The risk affects systems processing untrusted LAS files.

Recommendation

Upgrade libLAS to a version newer than 1.8.1 as soon as a fix is available. Until then, avoid processing untrusted .las files.

Original NVD description (English source)

libLAS through 1.8.1 contains a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the point record reader caused by truncating the schema byte size to 16 bits when sizing the point buffer. Attackers can craft a .las file with a LASSchema variable length record whose schema exceeds 65535 bytes, so tools like lasinfo, las2las, or las2txt write attacker-controlled bytes past the heap buffer, causing memory corruption and crashes.
