Summary

In the Eclipse ThreadX NetX Duo TFTP client (versions 6.0 through 6.5.2.202603a), the copy of a received ERROR packet message is not bounded by the end of the datagram, and the TFTP server reads one byte past a minimal ERROR packet. A malicious TFTP server can make the client copy up to 64 bytes of adjacent packet-pool memory into the error string or fault on targets with memory protection.

Risk Assessment

This can lead to leakage of device memory contents or application crashes, posing confidentiality and availability risks. IoT devices communicating with untrusted TFTP servers are particularly exposed.

Recommendation

Update Eclipse ThreadX NetX Duo to a version newer than 6.5.2.202603a if available, or restrict TFTP communication to trusted servers only. Until patched, consider disabling the TFTP client on devices exposed to untrusted networks.
