5th percentile - higher than 5% of all known CVEs

Summary

In libxml2 up to and including 2.9.14, XPath evaluation functions (xmlXPathRunEval, xmlXPathCtxtCompile, xmlXPathEvalExpr) reset recursion depth to zero before recursive calls, allowing a local attacker to cause uncontrolled recursion and a stack overflow via crafted expressions.

Risk Assessment

This could lead to application crashes (stack overflow) and potentially code execution in the context of a process handling untrusted XPath data.

Recommendation

Update libxml2 to a version containing the fix that preserves recursion depth across recursive calls.

Original NVD description (English source)

Uncontrolled recursion in XPath evaluation in libxml2 up to and including version 2.9.14 allows a local attacker to cause a stack overflow via crafted expressions. XPath processing functions `xmlXPathRunEval`, `xmlXPathCtxtCompile`, and `xmlXPathEvalExpr` were resetting recursion depth to zero before making potentially recursive calls. When such functions were called recursively this could allow for uncontrolled recursion and lead to a stack overflow. These functions now preserve recursion depth across recursive calls, allowing recursion depth to be controlled.
