CVE-2025-34281
MediumCVSS 5.4Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk30th percentile - higher than 30% of all known CVEs
Summary
ThingsBoard versions prior to v4.2.1 allow an authenticated user to upload malicious SVG images via the Image Gallery, leading to stored XSS. The exploit can be triggered when any user accesses the public API endpoint or embeds the image in an iframe during widget creation. The vulnerability resides in ImageController, which fails to restrict JavaScript execution.
Risk Assessment
An attacker could execute malicious code in the context of other users' sessions, potentially compromising their accounts and performing unauthorized actions. This could breach platform security.
Recommendation
Update ThingsBoard to version v4.2.1 or later. Until then, restrict SVG uploads or implement content validation.
Other vulnerabilities in ThingsBoard
See all- CVE-2026-36537Critical
ThingsBoard v4.3.0.1 is vulnerable to an authentication bypass during the OAuth authorization code exchange. The application improperly trusts user-supplied identity data within the user parameter of the /login/oauth2/code/ endpoint.
- CVE-2025-34282Critical
An SSRF vulnerability in the Image Upload Gallery feature of ThingsBoard versions prior to 4.2.1 allows an attacker to upload a malicious SVG file referencing a remote URL. Server processing may trigger unintended outbound requests.
- CVE-2026-53676High
ThingsBoard contains a prototype pollution vulnerability which may lead to arbitrary code execution within a sandboxed context by a user who can log in to the affected product with the tenant administrator privilege (TENANT_ADMIN).
- CVE-2026-9568Medium
In ThingsBoard up to version 4.3.1.1, a vulnerability in the getGatewayDockerComposeFile function of /api/v1/provision (YAML Handler component) allows code injection. Remote attack is possible but difficult.
- CVE-2022-45608High
An issue in ThingsBoard 3.4.1 allows low-privileged attackers (CUSTOMER_USER) to escalate privileges to administrator level (TENANT_ADMIN or SYS_ADMIN). The attack requires knowledge of the corresponding API parameter (authority: value).
Original NVD description (English source)
ThingsBoard in versions prior to v4.2.1 allows an authenticated user to upload malicious SVG images via the "Image Gallery", leading to a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The exploit can be triggered when any user accesses the public API endpoint of the malicious SVG images, or if the malicious images are embedded in an `iframe` element, during a widget creation, deployed to any page of the platform (e.g., dashboards), and accessed during normal operations. The vulnerability resides in the `ImageController`, which fails to restrict the execution of JavaScript code when an image is loaded by the user's browser. This vulnerability can lead to the execution of malicious code in the context of other users' sessions, potentially compromising their accounts and allowing unauthorized actions.
