CVE-2025-1396
LowCVSS 3.7Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Low risk15th percentile - higher than 15% of all known CVEs
Summary
Multiple WSO2 products with Multi-Attribute Login enabled are vulnerable to username enumeration. The system returns a distinct "User does not exist" error message regardless of the validate_username setting, allowing attackers to identify existing accounts. This can aid brute-force attacks, phishing, and social engineering.
Risk Assessment
Username enumeration helps attackers conduct targeted attacks against accounts, increasing the risk of unauthorized access. It may lead to compromise of accounts with weak passwords.
Recommendation
Update WSO2 products to patched versions or configure the system to return a generic error message regardless of user existence. Implement rate limiting on login attempts.
Other vulnerabilities in WSO2
See all- CVE-2024-9517Medium
The refresh token grant type in WSO2 products fails to re-validate account status before issuing new access tokens. This allows an attacker to obtain valid access tokens for user accounts even after they have been blocked by the user store, bypassing account lockout mechanisms.
- CVE-2024-4457Critical
The Management Console fails to properly validate input related to the configuration of JDBC user stores. This weakness allows an attacker to supply specially crafted input that can lead to the execution of arbitrary code on the affected server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the server with the privileges of the WSO2 product. This could lead to a full compromise of the system.
- CVE-2025-9312Critical
A missing authentication enforcement vulnerability exists in the mutual TLS (mTLS) implementation used by System REST APIs and SOAP services in multiple WSO2 products. Due to improper validation of client certificate–based authentication in certain default configurations, the affected components may permit unauthenticated requests even when mTLS is enabled. Successful exploitation allows a malicious actor with network access to the affected endpoints to gain administrative privileges and perform unauthorized operations.
- CVE-2025-14260High
Due to improper implementation of access control rules, the WSO2 product accepts user-supplied input related to resource location without enforcing expected validation constraints. An unauthenticated actor can direct the server to make requests to arbitrary network locations, accessing internal and external resources reachable by the product.
- CVE-2024-7478Medium
When a WSO2 product is configured to use an external user store, the system fails to adequately obscure the existence or validity of usernames during authentication attempts. This allows an attacker to repeatedly query the authentication mechanism with different username guesses, enabling enumeration of valid usernames in the external user store.
- CVE-2025-12317Medium
In WSO2 products, when internal roles are removed from a user, the system fails to invalidate previously issued authentication tokens. Users may retain access privileges even after role revocation.
- CVE-2024-6541Medium
The Class Mediator in WSO2 products fails to properly validate or sanitize messageContext properties used for dynamic values. Authenticated users may access or modify data across invocations.
- CVE-2026-0637Medium
When an Event Publisher output adapter is configured with irrelevant properties, the affected products log these properties without sufficient validation or sanitization. An attacker with access to 'wso2carbon' log files could retrieve sensitive information, such as credentials, potentially leading to unauthorized access.
- CVE-2025-13909Medium
The system accepts authentication requests without sufficient validation to enforce tenant isolation when using Email OTP, SMS OTP, or Magic Link as first-factor authenticators. This can lead to exposure of personally identifiable information of users in different tenants.
- CVE-2025-11850Medium
When secondary user stores are configured, the implicit-association resolver incorrectly initializes from a secondary user store and bypasses the primary user store during search and uniqueness checks. This can lead to associating a subject with an unintended local account if the same lookup claim exists in both stores.
Original NVD description (English source)
A username enumeration vulnerability exists in multiple WSO2 products when Multi-Attribute Login is enabled. In this configuration, the system returns a distinct "User does not exist" error message to the login form, regardless of the validate_username setting. This behavior allows malicious actors to determine which usernames exist in the system based on observable discrepancies in the application's responses. Exploitation of this vulnerability could aid in brute-force attacks, targeted phishing campaigns, or other social engineering techniques by confirming the validity of user identifiers within the system.
