CVE-2006-4392

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A vulnerability in the Mach kernel, used in operating systems including Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.7 and OpenStep before 4.2, allows local users to gain privileges. A parent process can force an exception in a setuid child and use Mach exception ports to modify the child's thread context and task address space, causing the child to call a parent-controlled function.

Risk Assessment

A local user can gain the privileges of a setuid process, effectively allowing system compromise. In multi-user environments this poses a serious threat to data confidentiality and integrity.

Recommendation

Update the system to a version containing the fix (Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later, OpenStep 4.2 or later). Restrict local access to trusted users until the update is applied.
