CVE-2006-3890

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A stack-based buffer overflow exists in the Sky Software FileView ActiveX control, as used in WinZip 10 before build 7245 and in certain other applications. A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code by supplying a long FilePattern attribute in a WZFILEVIEW object. This is a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-5198.

Risk Assessment

It allows remote code execution on the user's machine, potentially leading to system compromise, data theft, or malware installation.

Recommendation

Update WinZip 10 to build 7245 or later, and if possible, disable or restrict the FileView ActiveX control. Consider implementing mechanisms that limit ActiveX execution in the browser.
