CVE-2006-3873

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

Heap-based buffer overflow in URLMON.DLL in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 and XP SP1, with versions of the MS06-042 patch before 20060912. A remote attacker can cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code by sending a long URL in a GZIP-encoded website that was the target of an HTTP redirect. This is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2006-3869.

Risk Assessment

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the browser user, potentially leading to full system compromise. Organizations using unpatched Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 2000 or XP SP1 are at risk from attacks via simply visiting a malicious website.

Recommendation

Immediately install the updated MS06-042 patch (version dated September 12, 2006 or later) on all systems running Internet Explorer 6 SP1. If patching is not possible, consider migrating to a newer browser or operating system version.
